The Winter Cocktail Havens of the East Village

New York City is officially in the throes of winter. But it’s during these particularly cold months that certain cocktail enclaves really shine, providing a respite from the weather by offering classic and seasonal cocktails that warm and invigorate. Residents of the East Village apartments at EVGB are perfectly placed to enjoy them: There are four absolutely stellar options for some winter libations right nearby.

Holiday Cocktail Lounge | 75 St. Marks Place, New York, NY 10003
We begin with one of the oldest bars in the city. Built in 1835, the Holiday Cocktail Lounge with its stunning horseshoe-shaped bar and warm speakeasy vibe is an ideal place to escape the cold. Their bartenders are well-versed in classics like the Old Fashioned, the Sazerac, the Tom Collins, and the Negroni, as well as an array of signature holiday cocktails. It’s an iconic spot and well worth the visit.

Goodnight Sonny | 134 First Avenue, New York, NY 10009
In addition to having a top-notch raw bar, Goodnight Sonny offers unique twists on classic cocktails, like their Disco Old Fashioned, which is a sweeter, 70s-style version of the drink, and their Sunny Orchard Margarita, made with fresh-pressed green apple juice and roasted jalapeno marmalade. They also offer an assortment of seasonal cocktails that are finely crafted for the cold weather.

Pouring Ribbons | 225 Avenue B, Second Floor, New York, NY 10009
Three of the most accomplished bartenders in the city (Toby Maloney, Troy Sidle, and Joaquín Simó) opened Pouring Ribbons in 2013 and it quickly became one of the most acclaimed cocktail bars in existence, earning a spot — along with our final selection, PDT — on the World’s Fifty Best Bars list. The atmosphere is refined yet brighter and more open than most speakeasies. But the clear star of the show at Pouring Ribbons is the drink selection, which rotates by season. The bar has its own signature, double-scale rating listed below each cocktail to give customers a deeper insight into the flavor profile of each selection. Every drink here is meticulously and exquisitely prepared.

Please Don’t Tell (PDT) | 113 St. Marks Place, New York, NY 10009
Sticking with celebrated speakeasies, we end with one of the most famous examples in New York. Patrons enter Please Don’t Tell through a phone booth in an adjacent hot dog stand and are ushered into their seats for a one-of-a-kind cocktail experience. PDT goes all out with the dark, classy, windowless vibe, and it works perfectly. The drinks are absolutely phenomenal, and the vibe is quiet and relaxing. It’s quite simply one of the best bars there is, and one of the best places to escape the frosty weather. In fact, in 2011, it was named the Best Bar in the World by Drinks International. Be sure to call and make a reservation. And get there early.
