Exploring Ukrainian Culture at the East Village’s Ukrainian Museum

The East Village is full of hidden gems, and this post highlights a space in the neighborhood with an important link to the outside world. The Ukrainian Museum has been around since the 1970s, but it has taken on increased relevance since Ukraine was invaded last year. It serves as a place for American Ukrainians to feel a connection with the homeland, and it’s a venue where everyone can learn about and appreciate the rich tapestry of Ukrainian culture. Keep reading to learn more about this unique and relevant museum.

Founded in 1976 by the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America, the Ukrainian Museum has been hailed as the premier celebration of Ukrainian culture in America from its inception. Since then, the museum has been home to countless art and craft exhibits celebrating Ukrainian artists, as well as panel talks, film screenings, live performances, and more.

The museum relocated to the East Village in 2005, moving to a new, state-of-the-art building on East Sixth Street. Residents of the East Village apartments at EVGB won’t want to miss the yearly pysanky (Easter eggs) exhibit, which celebrates this ancient and colorful craft. These decorated eggs have pre-Christian origins, with the oldest examples dating back to the prehistoric era, though they have since been integrated into Christian Easter traditions in Ukraine. The museum even hosts workshops where experts guide participants in painting their own pysanky, which makes for a fun and informative afternoon.

Other exhibits at the museum include displays of folk art from the 19th century — which feature handmade baskets, clothing, and tapestries — as well as contemporary visual art responding to the various political upheavals that Ukraine has undergone in the last few decades. And the museum’s gift shop is a great place to buy pysanky dyes and other craft materials, like ornament-making sets, stuffed animals, paper doll books, and other items perfect for gifting or displaying in your East Village home.

The Ukrainian Museum is one of a multitude of cultural hotspots just moments away from EVGB. This access to a world of art, entertainment, and cuisine is an invaluable perk of living in the East Village’s Greatest Building. From intimate museums and basement comedy clubs to world-class restaurants and bars, you’ll never run out of things to see and do in this classic Manhattan neighborhood. So, if you’re ready to start your new East Village life, head over to the availability page and find the perfect home for you.
