Biking in the City

New York City is undoubtedly one of the most pedestrian-friendly cities in the US. But with over a thousand miles of greenways, designated riding lanes, and an avid cycling community, NYC is also one of the most bike-friendly places to live and ride in the country too. When you reside in the East Village apartments at EVGB, you’re ideally situated to experience the entire city on two wheels.

First, you’ll need to get a bicycle, whether that’s electric-assist, fixed gear, or your standard three-speed. Head to nearby Velo Bike Shop for a wide range of high-end models from Brompton and Giant—make sure you pick up a helmet and any safety gear you need here too. If you’d rather order your bicycle online, you’ll be happy to know it will be waiting for you in the secure package room at EVGB whenever you want to pick it up.

Once you procure your self-propelled vehicle, you’ll be able to store it in EVGB’s on-site bike storage room. Meaning: no more keeping a bike in your home—a rarity in New York City rentals. It’s safe, secure, and makes riding an easier and more pleasurable experience. And if you’re just in for a one-way ride, there are plenty of Citi Bike stations nearby where you can rent for a short trip.

Although the subway is less than a 10-minute walk away and the buses abound, you’ll be happy that you have your own mode of transportation for those days you want to get to where you’re going on your own time.

In 15 minutes, you can pedal up First Avenue to the office hubs of Midtown East. In almost the same amount of time, you can be Downtown and in the office in a flash.

In fact, all of Manhattan and beyond are more quickly accessible on a bike, if not a more enjoyable travel experience. Dinner in the West Village is a quick spin across town. Have a friend’s art gallery opening in Bushwick? Get there in 35 minutes on a bike. And there’s no better way to experience the lovely and historic East Village than riding around with no destination in mind.

For longer rides, hop on the East Side Greenway, which connects with Battery Park and then the Hudson Greenway. These protected paths that circle most of the island are like a highway for cyclists and offer some of the best views of the water and the city from the top of Manhattan at Fort Tryon Park all the way down to South Ferry. Watch the neighborhoods change from the low-rises of Downtown to the glistening glass office towers as you head north.

Ready to get pedaling? It’s all waiting for you here at EVGB.
