Now at Joe’s Pub

Serving up the best in live music, food, and drinks nightly, Joe’s Pub, a program of The Public Theater, is a nonprofit music venue that has been supporting up-and-coming artists since 1998. Joe’s, which boasts an impressive list of past performers, including Anne Hathaway, Alicia Keys, and Adele, will be hosting acts like Ami Dang, Nella, and Bokanté in the near future. Just blocks from the East Village apartments of EVGB, Joe’s is the place for music in the East Village.

The Public Theater is “theater of, by, and for all people.” An artist-driven venue with a wide repertoire, including annual and notable work at their Astor Place home and free Shakespeare in the Park at The Delacorte Theater in Central Park, The Public Theater plays a vital role in NYC’s world-renowned creative community. Born from that ethos, Joe’s Pub carries on a tradition begun by The Public more than 60 years ago.

Like The Public Theater, Joe’s Pub has always brought an eclectic mix of artists and performances to its stage. On any given evening you might find a program featuring spoken word performances or world music, or perhaps musical theater or pop. Over the years, it has only gotten better, attracting both emerging artists as well as those of the greatest renown. And with the 2011 renovation, Joe’s has become a much sought-after venue due to its improved sightlines, greater capacity, and a state-of-the-art sound and lighting system.

Beyond the technical aspects of the space, the interior is simply cool. Conceived by interior designer Serge Becker, the room resembles an accordion, similar to the one encased along the east wall of the venue. Becker intended as much, and added elements to reflect that motif, including the striped, bee-pollen bar, strip lighting, and exposed soundproofing. Photos line the south wall, including those of the famous when they were young, and a host of notables, including Leonard Cohen, Adele, Allen Toussaint, Alan Cumming, Amy Winehouse, and The Public Theater’s own Joseph Papp.

What’s more, with the cocktail and dining options available on site, there’s no need to rush off to dinner before making a show. Enjoy Joe’s menu of appetizers and lighter fare, plus a full selection of cocktails and craft beers. For a more relaxed atmosphere, consider The Library — long considered one of the neighborhood’s best-kept secrets. Hidden in the mezzanine of The Public Theater and named for the Astor Library, the bar and restaurant are truly elegant spaces. Both supper club and artist “watering hole,” it’s not unusual to see both locals and performers gather for drinks or a relaxing meal at The Library, before and after the shows. Chefs Andrew Carmellini and John Ramirez bring a true taste of NYC to their dinner guests with a variety of small plates, entrees, bar foods, and desserts.

Near to EVGB’s East Village luxury rentals, Joe’s Pub offers one of the premiere live music experiences in New York. Drawing both new and emerging artists, Joe’s offers programs that challenge the boundaries of music and performance, while entertaining a wide range of audiences and music aficionados throughout the year.
