South Bronx Mainstay Bronx Brewery Opens in East Village
The only thing that inspires more pride of place for New Yorkers than the city itself is the neighborhood they live in. For years, The Bronx Brewery has been the kind of place that both embodies and helps define a neighborhood. Now that Damian Brown, Bronx Brewery’s president, has opened a second location in the East Village, residents of the East Village luxury apartments for rent at EVGB will be able to get a taste of the “Boogie Down” Bronx — with a Downtown twist.
In this case, with beer and burgers comes a sense of community wedded to the artists and makers, from Uptown and Downtown alike, that make New York the unique and creative place that it is. The new space will feature food by Bastard Burger, a burger shop founded in Sweden offering American-inspired burgers and now making its debut here. Contributing to the atmosphere are murals by Bronx artist Andre Trenier and by Swedish artist Marc UÅ, who creates a new work for each Bastard Burger location that opens.
The menu offers smash burgers made with a custom beef blend from burger legend Pat LaFrieda sourced from grass-fed cows in Kansas, Iowa, and Nebraska. The signature Bastard Burger comes with dill pickles, double cheese, mayo, mustard, ketchup, and onion, and, like every burger on the menu, can be ordered in a fully vegan version featuring Beyond Meat. Diners will also find a special brunch menu that features The Bronx Brunch Burger, topped with an egg, and a “Well Dressed Pilsner,” arriving with smoked salt, lime, and hot sauce.
New beers will appear on the menu every week and a half, and this shop is bringing the artistic vibe it sowed in its original location with special events that will include music, art shows, writing contests for beer labels, and a place that fosters a community of artists by offering them a delicious place to gather. The 3,000-square-foot space can seat 75 people, and the hope is that outdoor seating will be coming soon.
Listed by New York Magazine’s Joshua M. Bernstein as one of the best breweries in NYC, The Bronx Brewery is changing what it means to make a watering hole that truly reflects the needs and interests of its clientele — both beer lovers and scenesters alike.
Come for the Bronx Brewery Summer Pale Ale and stay for the hip hop and the Swedish-South Bronx vibes that create a scene all its own, just moments from the East Village rentals at EVGB.
