The Cooper Union Experience
This spring, bring the creative spark home to the East Village apartments at EVGB with online classes from the Cooper Union, one of the country’s most celebrated art schools. With online courses in drawing, collage, and painting, you can hone your artistic skills at the institution where architect Daniel Libeskind perfected his technique, sculptor Eva Hesse revolutionized her art form, and painters like Alex Katz and R.B. Kitaj made the first brushstrokes of oeuvres that would soon become part of the canon.
A great place to start is the drawing class with Pablo Diaz, a mixed media artist and graduate of the Cooper Union who has studied frescoes at Pompeii and at the Convent of San Marco. In this course, you will learn the basic techniques of drawing, as you experiment with ink, charcoal, and pencil. Best of all, you’ll have the chance to reignite your relationship to your home as you re-examine what it means to really look at something.
Eric Hibit’s collage course provides another opportunity to deconstruct the act of seeing, perhaps more literally. Hibit will lead you from basic, black-and-white experiments with found shapes and images into more complicated, layered collage territory. It’s a course that will also expand your definition of what can be an art material — and what can be done with it. Let the history of collage and the pioneers of Surrealism and Dada like Max Ernst and Kurt Schwitters inspire you to see stray objects and images around you as potential fodder for your own creations.
Hibit also teaches Introduction to Color Theory, where you can immerse yourself in the more technical side of color use — understanding this can be a game changer for any artistic practice. And if you really want to delve into the skills of the artist, the course list has a rotating selection, which includes courses on landscape painting, watercolor, acrylic painting, portraiture, and composition.
You can supplement your artistic endeavors, and your creative East Village life at EVGB, with the events and exhibits that are constantly on offer at an institution that attracts some of the most creative people in the world, in one of the most creative cities in the world.
